Watermelon Slush/Ras Gola

With the weather becoming warmer, I am always looking forward to trying out something cool and chilled. Watermelon, lime, salt, sugar – voila! – Refreshing and healthy. I tried out a healthy version of the old favorite slush or ras gola!

 

 

This is another entry for the Fun and Sun event hosted on the Simple Indian Food blog.

Ingredients:

Watermelon: about half a personal seedless watermelon or equivalent yielding about 3 cups of fruit

Sugar: 1 tablespoon or to taste (as per the sweetness of the watermelon as well)

Salt: a pinch

Lime/lemon: 1

A pinch of chat masala (optional – but adds the gola-wala mazaa!)

 

Method:

  1. Chop the watermelon (deseed if it has the large brown seeds) into roughly 1-inch chunks. I got about 3 cups chopped cubes.
  2. Freeze the chopped fruit for about 3-4 hours.
  3. To make the slush, add the chopped fruit, salt, sugar, lime/lemon juice, and a teaspoon of rind to a blender.
  4. Pulse it to crush the frozen fruit and till the mixture is blended to slush. You may need to add up to a tablespoon or two of chilled water.
  5. Transfer to glasses. Sprinkle the chat masala over them (if you wish). Serve and relish! (Mine melted a bit by the time I took a pic.)
