Dal Fry

This one is a simple and healthy dal fry recipe. I used tuvar dal along with tomato for the dal fry. We use less of onion/garlic for dal, so avoided it … tastes yumm without onion and garlic.

I hope readers too will try and enjoy this simple dal recipe.

Tuvar dal (Yellow pigeon peas split): ½ cup
Tomato: 1 large
Green chillies: 3
Ginger: ½ inch piece
Turmeric powder: ½ teaspoon
Red chilly powder: ¼ teaspoon
Coriander powder: a pinch
Garam masala powder: a pinch
Jaggery/Brown sugar: 1 teaspoon
Asafoetida (Hing) powder: a pinch
Cumin seeds (Jeera): 1 teaspoon
Bay leaf (Tej patta): 1
Cinnamon (Dalchini): 1 stick (optional)
Cloves (Laung): 2-3 crushed
Oil: 1 teaspoon (You can use ghee instead for a richer taste and aroma)
Salt to taste
Chopped coriander leaves (cilantro): a tablespoon (optional – I didn’t have it on hand)

  1. Cook the tuvar dal in 2.5-3 cups of water in a pressure cooker for about 4-5 whistles or till mushy consistency. Wait for the steam to be released from the cooker.
  2. Once the steam is released from the cooker, mash the dal with the back of a ladle.
  3. Chop the tomato, chillies, and ginger finely.
  4. In a frying pan, heat the oil. Add the cumin seeds and fry.
  5. When they start popping, add the asafoetida powder. Also, add in the bay leaf, cinnamon, and cloves. Fry for a few seconds so that a nice aroma wafts.
  6. Reduce the heat to low. Add the chopped tomato, green chillies, and ginger. Sauté till the tomatoes are soft – you would need to stir so that the tomato does not stick to the vessel.
  7. When the tomatoes are soft and mushy, add the cooked dal and mix well.
  8. Add the spice powders, jaggery, and salt.
  9. Mix the dal thoroughly so that it is well blended. Also, check and adjust the water (you could add about half a cup more) so that the dal is not too thick.
  10. Allow the dal to come to a boil and simmer for a couple of minutes.
  11. Turn off the heat and serve! You can garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
