Homemade Chai Masala Powder

Chai – something many of us have everyday morning 🙂 . This recipe is the powder to spice up the chai – there are so many versions of the powder – you too can adapt the recipe/proportions to your taste. Making a powder of the spices rather than crushing them just when making the chai reduces the time/attention required – especially for busy mornings …

Heres the homemade chai masala powder for garma-garam masala chai!

Cloves (laung): 15-20
Black pepper (kali mirch): 4-5
Green cardamoms (elaichi): about 6
Dried tulsi leaves: about a teaspoon

Grind ingredients to a fine powder in a coffee/spice grinder or the chutney jar of a mixer. Transfer contents to a dry container with air-tight lid.

You can use a pinch of powder for 2 cups of chai.

I usually crush fresh ginger, but you can also include dry ginger (saunth/chukku in tamil) while grinding the powder instead.

  3. My Husband is a great fan of this chai masala. Whenever he prepares chai, he will add so much of this masala and makes a spicy hot chai. Our friends used to make fun out of him.

    Thank you for the recipe.

From skribles: Thanks Live2cook – ya a lot of it will surely make it a spicy chai!! But its a very flavorful masala

  4. Sounds great, but how do you use the powder to make chai? Thanks

  5. My very good friend from India made me a similar tea to this today, except it contained white pepper as well as black pepper and cinnamon. A pinch of the powder can be placed in the cup before adding water and milk. But remember not to drink all the liquid, otherwise all the spice that has settles at the bottom will end up in your mouth and can be, let’s just say, overpowering on its own. Anyway I had blocked sinuses this morning and after drinking three cups today, I feel almost de-congested.
